Virtual Sports, The New Norm? by Klassy K

Virtual Sports, The New Norm? by Klassy K

Home skillets! It’s been a long time and I know that it’s been quite a difficult time for all of us. Many have lost their lives due to the Coronavirus, became ill, and/ or suffered in some form of fashion. Whether emotionally, financially, physically, and/or spiritually, we all have been affected in some way. Our lives were completely changed overnight.  One day we are going into work to working from home, taking kids to school to homeschooling, having social gatherings with friends and family to now social distancing, Zooming, and wearing masks everywhere we go.

Honey chile, I have to say that one good thing out of all of this was not having to take my kids to school and picking them up. Homework, class projects, assignments, checking and reminding them to go to google classrooms, e-mailing and calling teachers, making sure their lunches are ready, trumpet and violin lesson(s), clothes are cleaned, hair is done, whew chile! I am having hot flashes just thinking about it. I guess I’m lazy, who knows?  Hey, that’s what working from home can do to you!

We (United States) were not prepared for this pandemic and unfortunately many lives were lost. Social injustice, police brutality, systematic racism, blacks being murdered, lynching of blacks (not suicide by “hanging themselves”), “Karen” incidents for just being black, and so many countless others, 45 and other political leaders are not doing much about it. I have to say that this “2020” was not what I was expecting it to be at all.  As a matter of fact, I was looking forward to it because it is the election year. Now Americans are finding other ways to entertain themselves, since sporting events, concerts, and other crowded outside events were all canceled.

Coronavirus Stadium

However, there have been many talks with owners of major league baseball, NBA, NHL, NFL, etc. to bring sports entertainment to the television. In fact, the Detroit Tigers will have their season game tomorrow, Friday, July 24 airing on Fox Sports, playing against the Cincinnati Reds at 6:10 pm. Unfortunately, the players will be playing in an empty stadium, but hey at least we can be somewhat entertained. What’s creepy though, some television outlets are thinking of creating animated virtual holograms to be “fans” in the stands. I guess to make watching the game seem “normal” since the virtual fans will make boo’s, clap, shout, and even do the wave. Well if that should happen at least we are going to be able to predict what they are going to do as soon as a player hits a home run, fouls out, or simply their teams are just flat out losing.

The NBA is doing “bubble” exhibitions with their players, which is another way of saying, welcome to the new norm pandemic basketball. The NHL is waiting to return to finish the rest of the season and the NFL is getting ready for training camps. I know eventually, sports entertainment will return completely.  However, will the new norm possibly be wearing masks, only allowing 50% capacity into a stadium, having hand sanitizers everywhere, practicing social distancing? Who knows?

“Gone But Not Forgotten” by Butch Ford

As the world continues to change and as we further adjust to our new way of life, two staples in Detroit sports history have recently been demolished, right up under our noses; Joe Louis Arena and The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Both monuments were the homes to several  NHL Stanley Cup and NBA Finals Championships by the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons respectively…as well as countless concerts, Monster Truck Shows, The Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus, and NCAA Collegiate Athletic Events.

Some of my fondest memories took place in these venues.  The Controversy and Purple Rain Tours by Prince; New Edition’s Heart Break and Home Again Tours, The Soldier of Love Tour by Sade, and The Triple Threat Tour featuring Bell Biv Devoe, Johnny Gill & Keith Sweat.

Palace

But it was the championship tradition established by our two winning franchises that make these such colossal losses.  We all remember The Bad Boys in the late ’80s.  Who could forget Steve Yzerman and The Russian Five?  And the “Going To Work” Pistons of the ’90s with Big Ben, Rip, Chauncey & Rasheed made us beam with pride.

We’re all gonna miss “The Joe” and “The House That Isiah Built” as they were affectionately known, but the memories will last for generations.  Detroit is a sports town with a rich sports history.  We’re just patiently awaiting the next wave to ride.  Don’t worry.  It’s coming soon.  But this time it will take place in the beautiful Little Caesars Arena.

A Change Gonna Come by Klassy K

Home Skilllets! I hope all of you are well and staying home, staying safe. Prayers go out to all who have lost a loved one to the coronavirus, natural causes, or illness; rather, it was a friend, family member, or stranger. Just know that we will get through this together at some point. For those that have the virus or know someone that has the virus, stay prayed up, take supplements (vitamins) and seek hospital care. The pandemic has affected everyone’s lifestyle, including work, clubbing, going to the park or movies, vacation plans, concerts, sporting events, going out with friends/family, and or just going over a family member’s house to have Sunday dinner. Basically, the simple things in life we once looked forward to, and now it’s all put on hold until further notice.

We are trying to do all we can to stay active, sane, and healthy. Some of us have resulted in streaming, going to the store to buy essential items, zooming, or face timing with our friends/family members. Maybe even some of us are doing social media challenges or trying to do some exercise in our home, helping kids with assignments and coming up with other things to try to normalize our lives as we once knew it. This virus just “creeped” upon us like TLC and straight jacking up our lives like Ice Cube. It’s been boring. Hey, dull sounds good right about now, especially with everything that’s been going on with people dying, sick, or out of work. Please remember Home Skillets, this to shall pass.  We all must do our part in stopping the spread of the virus. I’m with Governor Whitmer.

It’s only so much social media, challenges, streaming, and going to the refrigerator that we can take. I need some stimulating entertainment! Not “the over” 18 activity, but I actually miss seeing the Detroit Pistons lose.  I missed the Detroit Tigers game day opener and even watching the Detroit Red Wings run up and down on a cold ice skating rink wishing someone could bring them a cold pop like Sweet Brown. All jokes aside, though, I miss watching sports, and I am a female, so you know I’m bored. If it’s not the Superbowl, the draft, All-star games, championship games, and maybe a competitive game that I might want to see, not interested. The men are more so sport fanatics then females, in my opinion. I guess that’s why men athletics get more attention than women athletics. It’s all about money, and which one generates the most money.  Like C&C Factory, things that make you go hmmmmm.

Well, I don’t know if you heard the NBA and MLB are thinking of having empty seat games. Basically, it’s going to be a bunch of rich men playing like its practice, but it’ll be against an opponent. Due to social distancing, the games will be televised. Ironically, some countries are already doing this.  It won’t be any time soon here though; many speculate in June. The WNBA draft was last week, which you probably did not know about, but I bet you know about the NFL draft? You know why? Right! Well, read the last two sentences in the third paragraph. The NFL draft starts tomorrow, April 23rd through the 25th. It’ll be a virtual draft. The Commissioner, Roger Goodell, will be announcing the draft picks from his house. This year the Detroit Lions have nine picks which one of them is the 3rd overall draft pick. Sport media outlets are thinking that the Detroit Lions will either pick an offensive tackle, defensive end, or quarterback. Yes, you read correctly, a quarterback!

Yes, we already have a quarterback, Matthew Stafford, but I’m speculating that he is going to want to be traded or retire. He had two back surgeries, been in the league for over 10 years, his wife had brain surgery, has two small children and he is over 30. Time for some new blood. I am hoping that the Detroit Lions franchise makes the right choice and pick Tua Tagovailoa, a junior quarterback from the University of Alabama. He is young, talented, and fine! Oh yeah, he can play too! Google for footage/stats. If they pick him, I will gladly spend $200 for nosebleed seats, ha! Who am I kidding? I’m frugal, and I’m social distancing. LOL.

On the last note, I would like to dedicate this blog to my friend and co-worker Latonja Degraffenreid-Smith and her husband Ricardo Smith. She recently lost her father in law and his father Rev. Richard Smith due to the coronavirus.  I would also like to dedicate this to the front line workers that risk their lives every day to save others. All we can do is pray Home Skillets, for continuous strength, because the pain never ends. God bless.

The Curse of the Lions? by Klassy K

Cursed Lions

The Curse of the Lions? by Klassy K

Home Skillets! What in the hell or heaven is up? Hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas, and let there be a joyous New Year for you as well. As we are counting down the last few days of December and getting ready for 2020, let’s try to reflect on our mistakes, goals and forgiveness. Hope everyone is going to forgive, but not forget.  Let go and let God, and most importantly mind yo business! Speaking of minding my business, I am trying to figure out what in the fart doo doo is going on with our Detroit sports team.

The Lions lost their last three games. The Red Wings lost four in a row.  The only Detroit Team that seems to be staying afloat is the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons played the Washington Wizards 102-132, beating them almost by 30 points last night, spanking that ass, but maybe they beat them because the Wizards beat them just a week ago. Makes you go hmmmm?! The reason why I say that the Detroit Pistons are staying afloat is, because before this big W they lost four in a row! I mean what in the hell or heaven is going on! I ask myself this question all the time.  Yes, I talk to myself sometimes. My momma dropped me when I was a baby. So, there you have it. I haven’t been diagnosed yet, but I’m black.  My parents didn’t take me to the doctor, and they always said, “She’s growing, she’ll grow out of it”, LOL. But my sister and my brother all have the crazies, and we have passed it on to our children.  Maybe we are cursed? Hmmmm, like maybe the Lions?

I read an article the other day about, “Is Jeff Bezos trying to buy the Detroit Lions?” Really, dude! I mean who would want to buy garbage? It’s free at the incinerator. If any of you are wondering who the hell is Jeff Bezos, he is the CEO of Amazon which net worth is $115.9 BILLION dollars. That’s more money than at the Federal Reserve, more money than Oprah, and all the black athletes and entertainers combined. I would love to just spend 1 hour with him and ask what his secret to success is without paying for it. I mean hell, why would he need my $39.99 to buy his book? Home Skillets do ya feel me! That $39.99 to him would be to pay for his one bottle of water. Truth be told, no one wants to buy the Detroit Lions. You know why, because they were cursed by Bobby Layne. Yes, I know what you’re thinking.  Who in the hell is Bobby Layne? Bobby Layne was a former quarterback for the Detroit Lions back in the 1950’s.  During that time, they won four world championships which is now called the Superbowl Championships.  They were an unbeatable team, until the owners at the time traded him to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Can you believe that? Imagine going to work and you are greeted by security guards asking you for your ID and handing you your belongings while exiting you out the door. No notice meaning no call, no e-mail, no text, nothing in writing, nothing. Do you blame him for wanting to “curse” the Lions? Now you’re probably not superstitious, but if you noticed the Lions haven’t won any Superbowl’s within the last hundred thousand years! Great coaches, players have come and gone, Billy Sims, Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong Sue, Golden Tate, and that’s just to name a few. It just lets me know, it’s not about winning to the owners. They only care about selling seats and making that bag. Have you ever wondered WHY the Ford’s NEVER do a press conference or speak to the fans about the future of the Lions, nope. You know what’s the solution, stop going to the games, stop watching it on T.V, take the Knapp Knee, and stop wasting your money and putting your disgruntle thoughts about the Lions on social media. So, let’s try to bring in the New Year right, appreciate what you have, create new memories, love life, check up on your love ones, take care of yourself, and stay active.  Whatever “active” means to you, LOL.

Before signing off, check out your favorite sport teams.  The Detroit Pistons play this Saturday, December 28, against the Spurs @8:30 pm.  The Detroit Lions play the Packers this Sunday, December 29, at 1:00 pm.  Lastly, the Red Wings play this Sunday as well against the Lightning at 7:00 pm.  The Red Wings also play tomorrow in case you really want to watch it.

What Could Have Been? by Butch Ford

What Could Have Been? by Butch Ford

Last night Saturday October 20, 2019…The Houston Astros earned their second World Series berth in three years by defeating “The Evil Empire” better known as The New York Yankees 6-4 in the ALCS (American League Championship Series) on a game winning, walk-off home run by second baseman Jose Altuve.  Houston wins the series 4-2. They will face the Washington Nationals (formerly The Montreal Expos) who are making their first ever World Series appearance after sweeping The St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 last Tuesday.  But what makes this so special, you ask?  Well to us Detroiters it sets up a pitching duel of epic proportions.

The Astros are led by former Detroit Tigers’ pitching ace Justin Verlander, who won his first World Series championship in 2017 after being traded to Houston from Detroit mid-season for draft picks and prospects in a move to lower the payroll.  While Washington will boast the talents of former Detroit Tigers’ All-Star pitcher Max Scherzer who defected Motown for greener pastures in Our Nation’s capital in 2015.  The pitchers have 4 Cy Young awards between them.  Honoring baseball’s best pitcher in that given year as selected by Managers and Sports writers.  Verlander and Scherzer led Detroit to several American League and Central Division titles but were unsuccessful in bringing home the elusive World Series Championship in two failed attempts while still with the hometown team.

MLB (Major League Baseball) insiders and Tigers’ executives felt that Detroit’s window with that specific group had closed.  So, they decided to move in a new direction.  Hence…breaking the team up and starting from scratch with younger, lower salaried players…after a very competitive and successful yet expensive 9-year run.  But did they react too soon?  Could they have been a little more patient with that group?  Should they have waited a couple more years?  Die-hard Detroit Tigers’ fans can only wonder what if & what could have been…as we all prepare to watch these two former local heroes and behemoths battle it out in The 2019 Fall Classic.  Should be a great one!  Who you got?

Lions ain’t living their best life, thanks Matt… by Klassy K

What’s up home skillets?? It’s your girl again, and I know it’s been a while.  Now that summer is OVER, and the kids are back to school, I am BACK BABY!! It’s football season, and you know I must talk about The Detroit Lions. The last article I wrote was about how the Lions are purring, instead of roaring. I was just about to write a positive article when they beat the New England Patriots. I was like yes, yes, yes, not like having an orgasm yes, but I was excited that the Lions won.  However, it hit me that in my opinion, the Lions won, because Matt Patricia used to be part of the New England Patriots. Who would know more about how to beat your old team better than the old defensive coordinator? I mean come on home skillets, the guy worked for the New England Patriots. So, what did you expect?

giphy3

Matt served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator, and with that on his resume, they betta had won! I’m just saying! I know a lot of fans were rejoicing on social media, cheering in the stadium, eating and drinking beer at the tailgate, hugging and loving each other, singing ebony and ivory, and just showing love for the game. I know I was in the spirit of a lion as well, but all that excitement went with me to the bathroom, and I flushed it all down the toilet. You know why? The reason is the Lions played the Oakland Raiders, and the New York Giants the following week. In the words of Drake, they lost “back-to-back”.  Currently, the Lions are 1-3. Maybe they should change their name to “loser’s” instead of “Lions.” Why not? They have the same number of letters and they start with the letter L. Hey, I think I’m on to something. I should tell the Ford’s about my suggestion, but they are already embarrassed. So, why add salt to their existing wound.

giphy2

I hate to even add more salt. Did you know that Jim Caldwell, former Detroit Lions coach, is now teaming up with Vince McMahon to reboot the XFL football team for 2020? I don’t know if you remembered, but basically it was a football franchise team made up of athletes that couldn’t cut it in the NFL and other leagues.  They had muscle, physical strength, and could still play the game. They did not make a lot of money either, unlike some of the heavy hitters in the NFL, but at least they got to “still” do something that they enjoyed doing.  However, it only lasted the year that the season started.  The XFL football franchise is trying to “get their groove back” or should I say, “Make Football Great Again” for the Lions anyway. Maybe XFL can bring some excitement on the days that the Detroit Lions play. Ok, I am done with the shade, not quite. Did you also know that Jim Caldwell was one of the best coaches that the Detroit Lions has had since I was born? Without telling my age, but since the early 70’s. I know the Ford’s wanted to get to the Superbowl, but hell Jim Caldwell took them to the playoffs!

giphy

I don’t know if this new coach Matt Patricia is going to get the Lions to the playoff’s let alone a Superbowl. I know it’s his first year, I guess I should cut him some slack. Huh? Nope! Look at his resume, and then holla back at me. I am sorry Detroit fans, but 1-3 is not impressive considering Matt’s experience being a part of a ” winning team” that won playoffs, and later won Superbowl’s. Do you like the way I put the “s“, like I put the re”s”pek on that! I got mad love for teams that play together and win together. Hopefully, the Detroit Lions should have some type of motto to follow, because there is no “I” in team. Golden Tate can’t do it all, and the quarterback Matt Stafford needs to be protected. I think the Detroit Lions are lacking in “offense” and nobody can seem to protect the quarterback! If the Lions can stay away from Lafayette Coney Island and Krispy Crème doughnuts, maybe, just maybe, they can have enough cardio and strength to protect him. I’m just saying!

Well, while Jim Caldwell is “living his best life.” You can check out the Detroit Lions tomorrow, Sunday on Fox 2 Detroit, playing against the Green Bay Packers at 1:00 pm in Detroit. For more highlights and schedules, you can go to their website at www.detroitlions.com.
